Harold Lloyd

GIVING THEM FITS

Also known as "Lonesome Luke's New Occupants"

Phunphilms/Rolin Film Co./Pathé, 1915.  Directed by Hal Roach.  Camera:  Unknown.  With Harold Lloyd, Harold "Snub" Pollard, Bebe Daniels, Gene Marsh.

Luke, a clerk in a shoe store, cannot focus on work when pretty female customers are present.  His distraction causes business issues, leading to conflicts with the manager and Joe (Snub Pollard), the shoe repairer in the back of the shop.  Joe is angered by Luke's antics and insults.  In an act of revenge, Joe gets a bomb from a nearby factory and hurls it at Luke.  The explosion destroys the store, causing hundreds of shoeboxes filled with shoes to fall on Luke.  Only Luke's size 10 feet stick out of the pile of debris.

This one-reel silent comedy is part of the "Lonesome Luke" series, which was an early attempt by Lloyd to emulate Charlie Chaplin's popular "Tramp" character before developing his own unique style.  The film is also known as Lonesome Luke's New Occupants and is notable for being Bebe Daniels' first film with Lloyd.
